At VDL Smart Spaces, we are working on a new way of building. In our factory in Heerenveen, we produce complete components for houses that are ready-to-go to the construction site. This way, we contribute to faster solutions to the housing shortage in the Netherlands.

Building for the future
Since 2022, we have been manufacturing construction modules: bathrooms, toilet rooms, or technical installations, for example. We build these entirely in our factory. They can then be directly installed and connected on the construction site. This saves time and makes construction more manageable.

We use a fixed base for our modules. It provides space for different types of houses and finishes. Whether it concerns apartments or terraced houses: we always deliver the same high quality. Thanks to our way of working, we can quickly scale up and keep building all year round – whatever the weather.

Where We Come From
VDL Smart Spaces is part of VDL Group and has a long history. In 1907, Bartele Hainje started a coachbuilding business in Heerenveen. In the decades that followed, the company grew to become a well-known name in Dutch bus manufacturing. In 2022, that chapter came to an end, and the last bus rolled off the production line. Since then, we have been fully focused on residential construction.

Due to changing market conditions, VDL Smart Spaces has decided to shift its focus to modular housing. The factory has been completely converted to produce building modules, allowing us to respond to the growing demand for flexible and sustainable construction solutions for the future.
