Ronald Damsma (61) has been working for a year as a technical service engineer at VDL Smart Spaces in Heerenveen. After years of field service experience and working as an independent entrepreneur, he found a surprisingly good fit in VDL's module construction. “I was approached by a recruiter and spent a day shadowing. That’s when I knew almost immediately: this suits me. The work, the atmosphere, the way you are given freedom here: it all clicked instantly.”
From the field service to technical service
“I deliberately looked for a work environment where I feel good and where I can be versatile. At VDL, I am right where I want to be. Within the technical service team, you have a lot of freedom – and every day is different.”
He started as an facilities assistant within the technical department, but is now doing much more. "My role is broad, which suits me well. I enjoy organizing my work myself. Within our team of four people, everyone has their own specialty, and I mainly focus on the machinery and facilities aspect."
No day is the same
The technical service at VDL Smart Spaces runs on flexibility and teamwork. From tool inspections and ladders to maintenance of forklifts and machines – the tasks are diverse.
"Sometimes we plan a day with fixed tasks, but then suddenly there is a malfunction in the fence at quarter past four, and you have to switch immediately. Malfunctions occur frequently, so we try to work with manufacturers to see how we can reduce them."
Ronald sees it as a challenge to keep things running with a small team: “You constantly weigh up: what is the most important thing to tackle now? And you discuss that thoroughly with your colleagues. That collaboration is important.”
Room to grow
At VDL, there is plenty of room for development, Ronald notices. “We recently took a course on fire alarm systems. If you want to obtain your VCA or forklift certificate, that's perfectly possible. Everything is negotiable. That way, you can keep learning with pleasure.”
Additionally, the team also offers opportunities to young talent. “We have a BBL student and previously had an intern as well. It's nice to see how young people develop and get involved in the work.”
Unique product, unique factory
What makes VDL Smart Spaces special for Ronald is the product itself.
"There is no factory that makes the same as us. What we build here is truly unique. That makes the work interesting. You also notice that everyone is proud of it. It's great to work somewhere where you have influence on the final result."
When you ask Ronald what he thinks is the best part of his work, he doesn't have to think long. “It's the freedom, the collaboration, and the feeling that you're contributing to something special. When everything runs smoothly, that's truly a proud moment. And that's what it's all about.”
